Ljubljana, World Book Capital - programme of events
23 Apr 2010 - 23 Apr 2011
For a year between 23 April 2010 and 23 April 2011, Ljubljana will be the tenth city to hold the prestigious World Book Capital title, awarded by UNESCO.
In the year marked by books, literature, intercultural dialogue and the culture of reading, Ljubljana will host a rich and varied programme of events related to books. Those particularly worth mentioning include the festival Literatures of the World: Fable 2010 (Literature sveta: Fabula 2010), which will bring together authors from all continents, and the World Book Summit (Svetovni vrh knjige), participated in by renowned scientists and researchers.
Ljubljana will host around 300 events aimed to encourage reading, develop the culture of reading, increase the accessibility of books, and present various literary genres and literatures of the world to the public.
According to the UNESCO Selection Committee, Ljubljana was awarded the World Book Capital title "for the quality of its application as well as for its diverse and complete programme, widely and enthusiastically supported by all players involved in the book industry (publishers, bookstores and libraries)."
Commenting on the designation, the then UNESCO's Director-General, Koïchiro Matsuura, expressed his delight at seeing "this magnificent city acknowledged for its collective commitment to promote books and reading in a context of freedom of expression and cultural openness”.
Below is a selection of the major World Book Capital events intended for the general public. For the full programme of events, visit the official website of the World Book Capital 2010.
